Leuconoids
Leuconoid sponges are very different looking than the other two types of sponges (Asconoids and Syconoids) however; they are extremely similar when it comes to the process of reproduction. Like the other types of sponges, leuconoids can “go both ways” meaning that they can either reproduce sexually or asexually. There are two noticeable differences in the way reproduction happens in these sponges. There are organs in the male sponges that are designated for the production of sperm. This is another big evolutionary step in the right direction in the porifera phylum. The second major difference in leuconoids is that the sperm meets the egg for fertilization in open water, instead of the sperm cell traveling all the way to the other sponge. The new zygote will then find a suitable location for the new leuconoid sponge to grow.
